Rick Santorum is an Idiot

Yes, I called a U.S. Senator an idiot, what are you going to do about it?

Santorum defends Iraq war

Embattled U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said America has avoided a second terrorist attack for five years because the “Eye of Mordor” has been drawn to Iraq instead.

Santorum used the analogy from one of his favorite books, J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1950s fantasy classic “Lord of the Rings,” to put an increasingly unpopular war in Iraq into terms any school kid could easily understand.

“As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else,” Santorum said, describing the tool the evil Lord Sauron used in search of the magical ring that would consolidate his power over Middle-earth.

“It’s being drawn to Iraq and it’s not being drawn to the U.S.,” Santorum continued. “You know what? I want to keep it on Iraq. I don’t want the Eye to come back here to the United States.”

… to put an increasingly unpopular war in Iraq into terms any school kid could easily understand. Provided the school kid never actually read the Lord of the Rings.

This has to be the most idiotic analogy to come out of this election.

Sauron: Offer and Acceptance

From Letters of Marque:

“As a small token of your friendship Sauron asks this,” he said: “that you should find this thief,” such was his word, “and get from him, willing or no, a little ring, the least of rings, that once he stole. It is but a trifle that Sauron fancies, and an earnest of your good will. Find it, and three rings that the Dwarf-sires possessed of old shall be returned to you, and the realm of Moria shall be yours for ever. Find only news of the thief, whether he still lives and where, and you shall have great reward and lasting friendship from the Lord. Refuse, and things will not seem so well. Do you refuse?”

The Fellowship of the Ring, in “The Council of Elrond”

It seems to me that’s really two, maybe three separate offers. The first seems to be unambiguously an offer for a unilateral contract (to find the supposedly piddling ring for three of the Dwarf rings of power plus the estate of Moria), to be completed by performance. Din wouldn’t want to bind himself to produce a ring; it’s too risky. This seems like the straight-forward reward scenario envisioned as a prototypical offer for a unilateral contract.

Kids, just say NO to law school… :-)

_The Two Towers_ and Golf Balls

The Two Towers

Considering I rarely win contests, winning twice in one week is quite an occasion. This week I found out I won the super deluxe The Two Towers DVD.

I also won a sleeve of golf balls for sinking a putt in one stroke at an event at work.

WOO-HOO!

Let's go to CHURCH!
