  5. This is for Bob Love from the Jersey Cyclones. Myself and Bob Dixon of Woodbridge played snare for the Cyclones in 62, 63 …. I left and started practicing with BS in the winter of 63 ~ 64 however, I was drafted the summer of 64. Did a couple tours in VN, got out and went to school. Jerry Montamuoro and Ronnie Brennon got me to the Knights.

    Bob — December 13, 2009 @ 4:17 pm

  6. I am wondering who made the entry back in October 2007 about playing snare for the Jersey Cyclones of Matawan. (They were actually from Keyport, not Matawan.) It was by someone named Bob. I, too, played in the Cyclones snare line during the 1963 season and then joined the snare line for the BS Golden Knights. I played with them from late 1963 until 1966. This other Bob said he came to SAC (I assume BSGK) and marched in a parade. I don’t remember that, but it was a lot of years ago. If that other Bob is still out there and reading this would you please respond? I am really curious.

    Thanks!

    Bob Love

  49. HI, THIS IS FRED FORD FROM THE MELLO-DEARS. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT KNOW, THE MELLO-DEARS WERE FORMED IN 1961, AND MADE THEIR LAST APPEARANCE AT THE DCI NATIONALS IN MIAMI, FL IN 1983. SINCE THAT TIME WE HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN SEVERAL COED CORPS, BUT NONE AT THE PRESENT TIME. THE MELLO-DEARS ORGANIZATION STILL EXISTS AND RUNS BINGO AT MELLO-DEARS HALL IN OWEGO. WE ARE JUST NOW LIQUIDATING OUR CHARTER BUS BUSINESS BECAUSE OF LACK OF INTEREST.
I STILL HAVE ALL THE SCRAPBOOKS FROM ALL THE YEARS AND DISPLAY PICTURES ALL OVER MELLO-DEARS HALL.
WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ALL OF YOU AGAIN, THERE WERE AN AWFUL LOT OF YOU GUYS BETWEEN THE DEARS, AND THE DEBS.

    LETS GET TOGETHER,

  62. I was in the Saint Matthias Blue Max in the Color Guard Division from the years 1979-1983. Doing field shows was nothing compared to the VFW Nationals. That was alot of hard work but well worth it. Our biggest rivals were Fantasia. I remember many times we would tie with them. There was a time where we not considerd a Jr. Corp anymore. We actually qaulified for DCI, and believe it or not the whole corp was EXCITED but the corp Director did not want to go through with it. If anyone here remembers the VFW Nationals let me know. Please email me at denisewhite2007@aol.com

  70. I was a member of the Owego Mello Dears and trying to figure out what years! I just came across some old pics in the green uniform with the white billowing sleeves. Long white knee highs. I remember joining a little bit before a long bus ride from Owego down to FL, where we marched in a parade in Walt Disney World. The memories coming back of the heat and the bugs! All those hot practice days in a field! Is any of this ringing a bell with anyone out there? I only have these couple pictures for some reason, and boy the memories came back! I would love to add the correct or approx. dates that this took place. I know it would have had to have been mid to late 70’s at least. I am not sure how long the Mello Dears lasted, have been trying to get info off google, but no luck. Would like to put a little info in my scrapbook if anyone has any! Thanks so much!

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

  108. Looking back at the fun years playing a snare drum with a little known corp “Jersey Cyclones” from Matawan New Jersey. We did a few years in the Greater New York Circuit …. 62′, 63′ and 64. We placed 3′rd a few times in the circuit. Talk about pride …. What a fun time. Started practicing briefly with SAC and even marched in a parade with them once. Got drafted and that was that.

    Bob — October 23, 2007 @ 7:29 am

  109. I marched with the Monarchs. I remember competing against the Riversiders in the early 70s, Wow they had a fun show. My son is now in the HS band, bringing back all of those wonderful memories. It’s so expensive now. I couldn’t have afforded it when I was a kid.

  114. I march with the Riversiders before they took the Riversiders. We use to learn fundimentals drumming, bugling and marching at Saint Ann’s Church by the Farragut Housing Projects. We would move outside over by the warehouses on front st. I belive, that just happend to be in eye site of the east RIVER. Management asked the members to come up with a name. A young lady in the color gaurd came up with The Riversiders. We soon relocated from the church to Dr. White’s Catholic Community Center (It was brand spanking new.) In our first M&M contest wich was in The Garden State Drum & Bugle Corp Circuit. When our score and name was announced first we jumped for joy, not realizing we where in dead last place. :-) LOL Oh the good old days. We between last and third that year. The next year, there was a new Corp in town “The Riversiders” Now we where championship material. What life changing events lay ahead of us. We beat up on corps in our circuit including the powerful Bayone Bridgemen. It took them to stop us from being circuit champs two years running. They where the only Corp to beat us in the circuit that year. Have to go now but to all my buddies in the drumline
On Snare Drum: Echo(Des.), Double 0, Dennis and me Mike Morris. David, Clarence, Fluff on base, the Jive Five Cymbal section, the Magnificent Tenor Drum section, the Big Sound Horn Section, The Color Gaurd that had more snap then the crack of a whip, Dr. & Sister Watkins, Billy Borden, John Chalmus, Bobby Winslow all the parents who cared, We were the Corp that could. It ended all too soon. I miss you all. Mike Morris. Snare Drummer ‘65-68

  126. Hello from Alaska,

My name is Rick Shea, I found your emails while looking on the web for old recordings. I’m sorry I do not remember your names but you probably do not remember mine either. I am 1 of 4 brothers (Jim, Mike, Me, and Will) we all marched in both the Cleveland Caballeros and the Buckeye State Cabs after the merger from 72′ to 77′. I played the baritone, my brothers Jim played soprano, Mike played all over the drum line, and Will played cymbals. I still have old buttons, programs, ticket stubs and many old pictures and great memories. I recently retired from the Air Force after many years of traveling and setteled here in Alaska. Last summer I searched the web and bought 3 CDs

1973 U.S. Open (Marion, OH) Vol 1 Cleveland Cabs
1977 American International Open (Butler, PA) Vol 1 and 2 Buckeye State Cabs

I also bought a great Hawthore Muchachos CD on the eBay.
Funny how literally hundreds of thousands of kids like us were in Drum Corps but seldom do you run into people who have any idea what you’re talking about. Many years ago while stationed at the AF Academy in Colorado I found a DCI championship on a cable channel and watched every minute – it was very different from our time period. I won’t bug you anymore – check http://www.drumcorpsworld.com for the CD’s above, they might still have them. Good luck and good talking to you

    Rick Shea — February 4, 2007 @ 12:38 am

  127. I was in the Riversiders on the drum line (base drum, concert cymbals, small kettle). Also was drum major (riefly) along with my brother Alexander. I try to stay abreast of drum corps info and competitions. I know alot of us are not around any more, but maybe a reunion of some sorts can be put together. I often see our old director (the postman who lived in queens). Anyway, drop a line and May God Bless You!
