How Fast?

(via sekmet )

My budget blueprint will restrain spending, yet meet growing needs with a reasonable 4 percent growth rate, which is a little more than inflation. After paying the bills, my plan reduces the national debt, and fast. So fast, in fact, that economists worry that we’re going to run out of debt to retire. That would be a good worry to have.

Mmmm, Zero Gravity Kimchi

A Bold Taste Goes Where It Has Never Gone Before:

kimchi

Now kimchi is set to conquer the final frontier: space.

When South Korea’s first astronaut, Ko San, blasts off April 8 aboard a Russian spaceship bound for the International Space Station, the beloved national dish will be on board.

Three top government research institutes spent millions of dollars and several years perfecting a version of kimchi that would not turn dangerous when exposed to cosmic rays or other forms of radiation and would not put off non-Korean astronauts with its pungency.

Just how good could kimchi that “would not put off non-Korean astronauts with its pungency” be? ;)

I’ve been tagged for a book meme

(via Dunner’s)

The Rules:

  1. You have to look up page 123 in the nearest book around you.
  2. Look for the fifth sentence.
  3. Then post the three sentences that follow that fifth sentence on page 123.
  4. And then tag five people, just like you were tagged!

Let’s see… My home office is packed with books, so I’ll also do both fiction and non-fiction.

Fiction: Unknown Means by Elizabeth Becka (by my desk because it just arrived in the mail a few days ago)

Maybe not.

No one wanted to think of Marissa as a victim. Marissa least of all. But if Evelyn tried to avoid the topic, people would assume there has to be more to the story. Nothing beat a good drama like a terrific conspiracy.

Non-Fiction: The ACE Programmer’s Guide: Practical Design Patterns for Network and Systems Programming by Stephen D. Huston, James CE Johnson, & Umar Syyid (I was using it as a reference yesterday)

This is an application of the Strategy pattern [3], which allows you to change your “strategy” without making large changes to you implementation. To facilitate changing one set of IPC wrappers for another, ACE’s are related in sets:
[list deleted]
Each class abstracts a bit of low level mess of traditional socket programming. All together, the classes create an easy-to-use type-safe mechanism for creating distributed applications. We won’t show you everything they can do, but what we do show covers about 80 percent of the things you’ll normally need to do.

I’ll tag (a more or less random selection from my blogroll):

Rampaging Tank of Hydrazine

(via What’s new by Bob Park - Friday, February 22, 2008)

2. ANTISATELLITE WEAPONS: THE HYDRAZINE DECEPTION.

What do you do when a newly-emergent space power shows off its new anti- satellite capability, as China did last year? Well, you have to show that you too can shoot down a satellite. It’s relatively easy - satellites aren’t evasive and they keep doing the same thing over and over. To avoid violating treaties, you could sell it as a mission to save innocent lives from a rampaging tank of hydrazine. “If you inhale a lot of it, it could be deadly,” said the general in charge. The same is probably true of acetone, absinthe and toilet bowl cleaner to name a few. Anyway, the Navy did its part well. Unfortunately, as other countries flex their muscles in space it could be open season on dead school buses (there’s a lot of them).

Fans will make the call with 2008 ‘Countdown’ cinema event

Drum corps fans will get their chance to “make the call” as they select – and then judge – their favorite performances of the world’s most elite marching music ensembles as part of Drum Corps International’s 2008 spring cinema event, “The Countdown.”

Coming to National CineMedia theaters across the U.S. on Thursday, April 24, the program will feature six full-length corps performances from among the 36 World Championship finalists of 2005, 2006 and 2007, as chosen by fans during an online vote starting Wednesday, Feb. 27. The individual corps receiving the most votes (with no corps appearing more than once) will comprise the lineup for this special cinema event. But the fun doesn’t stop there!

the program will feature six full-length corps performances from among the 36 World Championship finalists of 2005, 2006 and 2007 - I’m sure I not alone in wanting to see a few shows from before 2005…

My name is James Campbell, the personal attorney to David Williams and I am contacting you in regards to some funds deposited with a bank by my late client Mr. David Williams who is now deceased and leaving no known relatives to claim the fund.

What does this have to do with me?

After a series of search for a reliable person who I can establish in claim of the fund, I contacted you and my contact with you is based on a legitimate arrangement. I am contacting you because I feel I could trust you. The fund in the bank is $9.5million dollars.

I must really be a “reliable person” because I’ve gotten several of these kind of emails.

Due to the importance of this matter, I would appreciate if you can write me back to enable me detail you further about this matter. I do understand that this will sound so skeptical but I assure you that it is legitimate. Please you are not compelled to proceed with me because I require someone that is highly responsible and trust worthy.

How exactly would someone who would get involved with such an obvious scam be considered highly responsible and trust worthy?

I will not release every information regarding this matter until I hear back from you.

Then if I am satisfied, I will detail you with every information regarding this transaction and also give you more information about myself to enable you have an idea of the person that you are dealing with. We shall negotiation the percentage split during our future correspondence.

We shall negotiation the percentage split during our future correspondence — How about - me: 100%, you 0%.

I await your immediate response.

You may wait…

Best regards,
James Campbell (Esq.)

Who the fsck is Mark Swanson (mark.swansonjunior@yahoo.com)? Mr. Campbell never mentions he sent this email from Nigeria…
