SUMMARY: The Department of Transportation in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security is considering the need to continue to operate or invest in the North American LORAN–C Radionavigation System beyond fiscal year 2007. Future investment decisions might include: Decommissioning the LORAN–C system, maintaining the LORAN–C system as currently configured, or developing a fully deployed Enhanced LORAN (eLORAN) system. Contributing factors to these decisions are (1) whether the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other available back-up systems are adequate for the public’s navigation and timing needs, thus making the LORAN–C system redundant, and (2) whether the eLORAN investments made to date provide enhancements that now merit consideration as a complementary capability to GPS, and not merely as a GPS back-up. The Department of Transportation and the Department of Homeland Security seek public input on the various decisions currently under consideration. Since January 16, 2006, over 40,000 attempts to post comment spam to this site have been logged. That’s 1,000 spam comments since January 21, 2007 and 10,000 since November 18, 2006. That’s more than 27 times the number of legitimate comments posted to this web site since June, 2001.

Wow! I hope I can play like that when I’m 65. Who am I kidding? I wish I can play like that now.

Remembering the First Google Bomb

Earlier today, Matt Cutts and the Google software engineering team posted an update citing the progress they’ve been making fighting Google bombs. Back in the old days, these pranks were common practice, but they’ve become less prevalent thanks to Google’s diligence.

That’s OK — link bombs are so 2001.

In January, 2001, Wired News ran an article about a humor site called Hugedisk. During the run-up to the 2000 presidential election, it linked a particularly saucy two-word term to a site selling official George W. Bush campaign merchandise. We contacted one of the Hugedisk admins and offered him the opportunity to recount his side of the story and reclaim his stolen glory. So here it is, a first-hand telling of the bomb that started it all.

I remember the “dumb motherfucker” incident. The amusing part was the site selling official George W. Bush campaign merchandise (how lame is that?) went ballistic and sent a cease and desist to one of the originators of the Google bomb.

For what it’s worth, it looks like Microsoft’s search can still be link bombed…

I’ve gone ahead and upgraded to WordPress 2.1. Everything pretty much worked except the plugin, WP Unformatted. I had to modify WP Unformatted to get it to work with WordPress 2.1. I’ll make these changes available when I’m sure there are no problems.
