Google Bombs Away

Remembering the First Google Bomb

Earlier today, Matt Cutts and the Google software engineering team posted an update citing the progress they’ve been making fighting Google bombs. Back in the old days, these pranks were common practice, but they’ve become less prevalent thanks to Google’s diligence.

That’s OK — link bombs are so 2001.

In January, 2001, Wired News ran an article about a humor site called Hugedisk. During the run-up to the 2000 presidential election, it linked a particularly saucy two-word term to a site selling official George W. Bush campaign merchandise. We contacted one of the Hugedisk admins and offered him the opportunity to recount his side of the story and reclaim his stolen glory. So here it is, a first-hand telling of the bomb that started it all.

I remember the “dumb motherfucker” incident. The amusing part was the site selling official George W. Bush campaign merchandise (how lame is that?) went ballistic and sent a cease and desist to one of the originators of the Google bomb.

For what it’s worth, it looks like Microsoft’s search can still be link bombed…

Here’s someone who has it coming…

Check out: Rachael Ray Drinking Game

Let’s see just how popular a certain somewhat annoying Food Network personality actually is. We all know as soon as someone attains celebrity status, people start looking for nude pictures or naughty videos featuring that person.

As far as I know, no such pictures or videos featuring Rachael Ray exist.

(from the there’s some awfully strange people out there dept.)

While browsing my web access logs, I discovered that someone came to this web site because this page is among Google’s top results for the search string, temptation on the porn elf.

Up until now, I thought “nude pictures of Hugh Beaumont” was the strangest search string found in my access logs (for the record, there are no nude pictures of Hugh Beaumont anywhere on this web site).

George W. Bush is a …

girlie man.

(via Musings of a Philosophical Scrivener)

Melanie Matson at Just a Bump in the Beltway presents an interesting point/counterpoint: two articles about campaign appearances by the two candidates:

John Kerry: has hecklers in his audience; Kerry and his wife (introducing her husband) actually trade barbs with the pro-Bush hecklers.

George W. Bush: restricts attendance at his rallies to his own supporters, and herds protesters into “free speech zones” located as far away as he can arrange.

There’s only one conclusion you can make, and you can make it either by comparing these campaign vignettes, or by comparing their military service (or in Bush’s case, his “military service”).

John Kerry has balls. George W. Bush is a craven coward.

Or to borrow a turn of phrase from Ahnuld, George W. Bush is a girlie man.

In fact, because I’m a glutton for punishment who wants to wallow in his own insignificance for a bit, I’m going to propose a new Google-bomb. You can guess where that link to girlie man goes. Let’s see if anyone else picks up on it. I’m betting not….

But I’m used to being a nobody.

A little Google tomfoolery never hurt anyone….

John Kerry is being Google-bombed by conservative activists (”waffles” -> John Kerry). Since this web site has a high ranking for waffles and things related to waffles, I’m helping out our conservative friends so their efforts don’t become a miserable failure.

George W. Bush is unelectable and a miserable failure. While we’re at it: Bush Military Record.
